DPW Site Visit - Brooke Dockyard Transformation into Maritime Museum

JKR Sarawak Southern Regional Office had given a briefing on The Proposed Transformation Of Brooke Dockyard Into Maritime Museum At Market Street, Kuching, Sarawak during the site visit of YBhg. Datu Ir. Haji Zuraimi Bin Haji Sabki, Director of Public Works to Brooke Dockyard today.

Among the objectives of the construction of the new museum are:

- To give a feeling on the atmosphere of the dockyard during its operational days in the 1920s;

- To give to the public the understanding on the uniqueness of the Sarawak's heritage during the early phases of industrial and transportation activities in the state;

- To demonstrate the process of ship building and maintenance which used to be the main activities in Brooke Dockyard;

- To provide a comprehensive historical exhibition with regards to the Maritime in Sarawak which includes the 'penambang' transportation using an interactive medium; and

- To showcase the evolution and chronology of the tools and equipment that have been used since the establishment of Brooke Dockyard in the 1920s.

The scope of the construction project includes conservation of the old buildings (workshop, training school, drydock & pump house), conservation of industrial heritage equipments and machineries, new exhibition area, caisson, pontoon, museum requirements and exhibition development works, which include the building of ship replica at the dry dock.

Also present during the site visit were Encik Tazudin Mohtar, Director (Sarawak Museum Department), Puan Siti Nurainawati Bte. Aini, JKR Deputy Director (Building & Specialist), Encik Mohd Ismail Ramli, Representative (Ministry of Tourism, Arts & Culture), Curator Mohd. Sherman Sauffi, officers from JKR Sarawak Headquarters, Southern Regional Office and contractor representatives.
